2019 Winner of the Capstone Editing Textbook Grant for Undergraduates

Posted by Capstone Editing on 8 February 2019

Capstone Editing is very excited to announce the 2019 recipient of our Capstone Editing Textbook Grant for Undergraduates, Erin Powell. She is an enthusiastic and proactive student, and global citizen, who is excited to make the most of her time at university.

Since 2015, she has been traveling overseas, seeing countries like China, the United states, France and Thailand through cultural exchange programs and meeting friends internationally. In Australia, she spends most of her time participating in local sports such as girls’ football, hockey, basketball and various equestrian sports. Despite being far away from many educational resources, growing up in a rural area has given her many opportunities to further her education and broaden her horizons.

Erin has lived in rural Victoria since she was three and recently completed high school at the Hamilton and Alexandra College. In 2015, severe drought forced her family to sell their farm and left them with little more than debt and illnesses. Any income that was available helped Erin complete her secondary studies, but their financial situation for 2019 is still precarious. Her family has always encouraged her and proved to her the endless possibilities of having a good education and just how much someone is capable of when they put their mind to things and have the right attitude.

Despite the challenges in her life, this year Erin will be commencing a Bachelor of Business (Property) at the University of South Australia, which is 6 hours interstate. Her interest in this field came from discovering that her cousin was working in property valuation not far from where she lived. After talking to her cousin and learning more, Erin was inspired to go to university and pursue this career.

We are very pleased to award Erin with $1,000 per year for three years to purchase the required textbooks as well as any books that will assist with her studies. We are very happy to be able to support her and reduce the continual pressure on her and her family. We hope that this grant will assist her to concentrate on her studies rather than struggling with the added burden of expensive textbooks.
